Should we aim to be happy at work?

Our work plays an undeniable role in our individual fulfilment – at the very least, because it can make us outright miserable. But what kind of happiness are we talking about, when we speak of happiness at work? Anne-Sophie Moreau shares her perspective.

“Chief happiness officers” were the object of much mockery when they first appeared in the workplace, partly because they proposed overly superficial solutions to deep-rooted issues, such as the mental suffering of employees, but also because they were broaching a taboo subject: deep down, we’ve always felt that happiness was a private issue, that it was none of the company’s business; and that it would asking too much of work, for it to also make us happy! Yet our work plays an undeniable role in our individual fulfilment – at the very least, because it can make us outright miserable. But what kind of happiness are we talking about, when we speak of happiness at work?
