Here, Laurie explains how she was prompted to return to her first vocation: to become a nurse.

Laurie, 22, nursing student:

“This crisis brought me back to what's essential”

 

I obtained a bac ST2S [a secondary education qualification in social science and healthcare] at the age of 18. Then I started nursing school. I completed three semesters, before realising that I wasn't so sure I wanted to continue... I was namely afraid of the responsibilities that come with this job.

So I changed paths, and started a course in “negotiation and digitisation of customer service”. I did my apprenticeship in a company selling granite, in Alsace. The course was going well, but I was afraid I might get bored. I was also struggling with the day-time schedule, and sometimes felt like I wasn't really myself when selling products or services.

I was ready to carry on and get my degree when the Covid crisis began. When the lockdown was announced, I wanted to be on the ground, so I used the care worker status obtained in my first year of nursing sc
